Here we have an an outstanding book of crochet patterns titled "Corticelli Lessons in Crochet book no. 2, which is dated 1916. The book is softcover and measures approx. 6 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches. It includes 64 pages of outstanding instruction.

A few of these patterns are for knitting or have knitted details, but the majority are all crochet. In the beginning is a guide to the abbreviations & an explanation of stitches. It looks to me as though moden crochet-ers should have little or no trouble finding materials for the majority of these patterns; the recommended yarns are vintage/antique Corticelli yarns, however, crochet thread in the appropriate size should suffice for almost all these patterns.

The featured items in this book are varied and interesting; there are patterns for slippers (child's & ladies'); ladies' coat fasteners (kind of like frog closures on Asian style garments- these are truly wonderful and you could use them in many ways on modern garments that you are making!); crocheted buttons; yokes & collars; sweaters; edgings & insertions for table or bed linens; initials/monograms for filet crochet or cross stitch embroidery; pillow or cushion top; doilies; napkin rings; card case; chair cover; afghans & bedspreads; gentleman's silk golf hose; baby cap; coasters; boudoir caps; lingerie clasps; bonnets; etc.There is a particularly delightful pattern for a peacock door panel of scrim and filet crochet. Another highlight is the Roman Silk Bag that is irresistably pretty and is of such classic styling that you could easily carry it today. Another visual treat is the intricate library scarf that combines embroidery and crochet; you would be hard-pressed to find such a piece even in the nicest of antique stores.

These patterns are antique and lovely. Some of them, for example the gentleman's golf hose, and the boudoir caps, are seriously outdated. However many of the other patterns are so beautiful and well designed that they would be suitable for making and using today and into the future. It is never too late to create family heirlooms! If you're going to go to all the trouble to crochet an item, it really should be something special. This book has plenty of truly special items for you to choose from.
